Civil Rights Essay

Ever since slaves were transported from Africa to America they have been greatly discriminated against. However, in the late 1960’s the Civil rights act was officially passed and African Americans were legally no longer discriminated against, that is only in a perfect world.
Even years after the civil rights act of 1968, African American still struggle to find good jobs and careers. Jobs are becoming much more competitive and with more and more white Americans graduating from college, and less African Americans having completed high school it makes it a very uneven match up in the workforce. It is easier for an African American to get a job in a big city then it is in a small town like Evanston, this is mainly because people in larger cities have grown accustom to interracial work places while in smaller towns people are not used to diversity as much. This is not fair but hopefully this will change and soon.
But this is not the case all around America. In some organizations laws have been implemented to make it fairer or more equal for every race or ethnicity. The NFL, for example, made a coaching and organizational rule, if you have an open coaching position you have to interview at least one African American candidate and one Caucasian candidate for the job before making your final decision. This gives everyone an equal chance for the job at hire, but some peoples say that this doesn’t change anything and that if a team wants a white coach they will just interview a black man to satisfy the rule, recently happened with Seattle Seahawks.
Because African Americans are a minority they usually get a lesser education than a majority group. This is mainly because minorities are almost forced to live in poverty and go to schools where their education is not going to be above par. This could possibly hinder their futures and cause them to get lower paying jobs, just continuing the cycle of African American poverty. With a below average high school education, maybe not even a full high school education in some cases, these young men and women have very low chance of getting into college and if they do the issue of how to pay for a further education.
If minorities like African Americans are not given equal opportunities in the work force it could seriously hurt this nation. Everyone needs to be successful in order to have a prosperous nation. African Americans are given much better opportunities for employment today then they would have ever got 50 years ago, so progress has been made. But the main struggle for black Americans is not getting equal opportunities for jobs but getting the education needed for the jobs available.
In today’s society, African Americans are given more opportunities for high paying and lower wage jobs, the problem is not discrimination in the work place as much as it is getting the education required for these jobs. In a way this is still discrimination because it is the former slave owners who made it difficult for African Americans to get themselves out of poverty and into higher level jobs. Discrimination in America is becoming less frequent and sooner or later everyone will have the same opportunities for jobs.
